I am an abstract painter and visual artist based in Omeath, Co. Louth, Ireland and a Fine Art graduate of the Belfast School of Art, University of Ulster, where I received a First Class Honours Degree in 2009.
A core thread that weaves through my work is a probing of identity, ranging from the personal through to the cultural and political sometimes albeit in a romanticized, reminiscent concept. I grew up in the border town of Newry, Co. Down in the 1970s and 1980s and have always been fascinated by its hinterlands and have become to realise how the effect of a geographical location can have on the emotions and behaviour of the individual and how this relatable connection to the land and, this ever-present psychogeography has now become apparent within my own practice.
My latest bodies of work Utopian Spaceships and Próiseas/Process are developed from a series of photographic drone images taken of the thirteen Army watchtower sites that were based along the south Armagh border during The Troubles. I commissioned a drone photographer to capture these thirteen sites now that they have been decommissioned, the intention being that the drone images would reflect a contemporary cartography; a new way of depicting the landscape but also to experience the juxtaposition of rural Irish landscape versus the architectural, manmade structures of surveillance. By manipulating the drone images with solarized filters-similar to the heat sensitive cameras the army would have used for surveillance and focusing on the shapes and linear structures that were picked up by the drone, I have translated the work into this series of works on paper through screenprint, monoprint and painting.
