Polluted Water Under the Molecular Lens

It’s been a while but I am back!!!

I was preparing for my solo show in the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny- my first solo show in fifteen years and my head and actually my whole life (saddo) became totally consumed with painting so nothing else could happen I’m afraid, so the brain left the building lol…

Anyways, where was I…yes, so I was at that truly, lovely experimental stage of inks, papers and collages. I knew I wanted to contain this explorative work in some way, rather than having random pieces lying about the studio so I bought a beautiful hand made, paper concertina sketch book and as I worked on bigger pieces, or things that were drying, I was able to go back to it and experiment with different textures, collage, mediums and mini- installation ‘thingys’ within the pages. It was a messy business, let me tell you, trying to keep the book straight and flat and not let all the ink slide onto the floor!!!!!

As I said before, what was apparent and what kept on resurfacing was the ‘circle’ or a circular form of some kind. That of course was what I saw in the microscopic images taken of the polluted water so it was just now, how could I visually translate those findings into something more ‘concrete’? As I worked through the sketch book, I found myself adding wee assemblages ‘onto’ and ‘around’ the book and this was a note to myself, that I really would like to see these cellular forms in some kind of 3D format in the future. I think it was because that when I looked under the microscope, I could see all these living, moving, multicellular forms and I wanted to see them more than just ‘flat’ visuals…

Fast forward six/nine months, I submitted for local arts council funding and am delighted to report that I got it!!!! The Training and Development Bursary from Create Louth will allow me to join the FABLAB IN Dundalk, Co. Louth where my intention for the work is to bring my paintings to life by translating elements of my microphotographic studies into innovative molecular three-dimensional structures. I will wait until my current show is over and hopefully start in the FABLAB in June 2025!!

So, as I said Uisce Salach is showing at the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny up until the 31st May 2025 and my lovely concertina book and two years exploration into the polluted water of the illegal fuel industry is currently on show. If you don’t get a chance to see the show, you can get a wee looky around the gallery here

So on that note, I will catch up with you next time as I feel a monoprint coming on!!!!
